Kountze Texas

Peaceful lifestyle just minutes from the city

A few minutes drive from the urban conveniences of the Gulf Coast’s Golden Triangle, Kountze is a world away from busy life for the growing number of people who call this peaceful area home. Founded as a lumber town at the juncture of two early East Texas railroads, the town became the county seat of Hardin County because of its proximity to the geographic center of the county.

The community is central also to the surrounding units of the Big Thicket National Preserve. An interpretive center and maintenance facilities currently being developed a few miles to the north of Kountze are expected to attract both tourist and researchers to the area.

The abundant recreational resources available in the woodlands and waterways around Kountze make it ideal for family fun and togetherness. Hardin County is the county in the United States with both a national park and a state park. The importance of family values is evident in the community’s focus on its schools and summer recreation programs and in the strength and diversity of the religious community.

Still relatively undiscovered by developers, Kountze offers the advantages of small town security and friendliness minutes away from urban shopping and conveniences…truly the best of both worlds for vital businesses and active growing families.

Recreation in Kountze centers around the abundant natural resources in the area. Bird and wildflower enthusiasts will enjoy hours of exploration along the nearby hiking trails of the Big Thicket National Preserve and the Roy E. Larsen Sandyland Sanctuary. Village Creek, the Neches River and nearby lakes make water sports some of the most popular family activities.

A recently developed city park in Kountze offers basketball courts, tennis facilities, soccerfield, playground equipment, picnic tables and a walking trail.

Family farms and U-pick operations offer strawberries and mayhaws in the spring, blueberries, peaches and vegetables during the summers, and Christmas trees for the holidays. A local plant shop has received statewide recognition for their offerings of native plants and trees. Families on outings to local farms can see exotic animals along with traditional farm animals.

The Kountze Public Library offers excellent resources for both recreational reading and research. It has outstanding collections of genealogical material, Big Thicket history and adult education materials. Its ties to urban and state library systems offer access to a wealth of additional resources. The library is currently planning to expand its facilities with a new building in the future.
